Frequently
Asked Questions

Who needs these services?

Seniors experience many of the same problems that younger people do, but they also have some unique challenges as they undergo changes in lifestyle. If these changes include a loss of some independence, they are often accompanied by feelings of anxiety, fear, anger and depression. My practice is tailored to specifically help seniors cope with these problems as well as others. Even patients with Alzheimer's and dementia can benefit from therapeutic stimulation.

Where are sessions conducted?

Transportation can be a big barrier to services for some seniors, so I make house calls. I also have secure, handicap-accessible meeting space available for individuals, families or groups.

How are clients referred to me?

I make presentations about this service to physicians, clergy, parish nurses, outreach programs and nursing homes. I also receive referrals from social service workers in North Dakota and Minnesota.

How do I proceed after a referral is made?

If the client is in a nursing facility, I would first contact the administration to notify them of the referral and answer any questions they might have. On first meeting the client, I would administer an intake assessment to determine their mental and emotional status.

Who pays for the counseling sessions?

The client, the client's family or the administrator of their funds. Some clients may be eligible for state or county-supported programs.

What accommodations do I make for client medications?

I need to be familiar with the client's medications to effectively counsel them. I can also work to improve the client's compliance and help monitor the benefits of psychotropic medications by working with their existing health care providers.
